God Answers Prayers
I read this recently and wanted to share with many people. I’m not sure who is telling the story, this is something that was submitted at work (Catholic Hospital system) into our Daily Reflections. I feel like email forwards get deleted way too easily, and then I remembered I have a blog. So here it is I hope you enjoy it and feel free to share it with others <3
Isaiah 65:24 And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. This is a story written by a doctor who worked in Africa:
One night I had worked hard to help a mother in the labor ward; but in spite of all we could do, she died, leaving us with a tiny, premature baby and a crying two-year-old daughter. We would have difficulty keeping the baby alive; as we had no incubator (we had no electricity to run an incubator).
We also had no special feeding facilities.
Although we lived on the equator, nights were often chilly with treacherous drafts. One student midwife went for the box we had for such babies and the cotton wool that the baby would be wrapped in.
Another went to stoke up the fire and fill a hot water bottle. She came back shortly in distress to tell me that in filling the bottle, it had burst (rubber perishes easily in tropical climates).
‘And it is our last hot water bottle!’ she exclaimed. As in the West, it is no good crying over spilled milk, so in Central Africa it might be considered no good crying over burst water bottles.
They do not grow on trees, and there are no drugstores down forest pathways.
‘All right,’ I said, ‘put the baby as near the fire as you safely can, and sleep between the baby and the door to keep it free from drafts Your job is to keep the baby warm.’
The following noon, as I did most days, I went to have prayers with any of the orphanage children who chose to gather with me. I gave the youngsters various suggestions of things to pray about and told them about the tiny baby. I explained our problem about keeping the baby warm enough, mentioning the hot water bottle, and that the baby could so easily die if it got chills. I also told them of the two-year-old sister, crying because her mother had died.
During prayer time, one ten -year-old girl, Ruth, prayed with the usual blunt conciseness of our African children. ‘Please, God’ she prayed, ‘Send us a hot water bottle today It’ll be no good tomorrow, God, as the baby will be dead, so please send it this afternoon.’
While I gasped inwardly at the audacity of the prayer, she added, ‘And while You are about it, would You please send a dolly for the little girl so she’ll know You really love her?’
As often with children’s prayers, I was put on the spot. Could I honestly say ‘Amen?’ I just did not believe that God could do this.
Oh, yes, I know that He can do everything; the Bible says so. But there are limits, aren’t there? The only way God could answer this particular prayer would be by sending me a parcel from the homeland. I had been in Africa for almost four years at that time, and I had never, ever, received a parcel from home.
Anyway, if anyone did send me a parcel, who would put in a hot water bottle? I lived on the equator!
Halfway through the afternoon, while I was teaching in the nurses’ training school, a message was sent that there was a car at my front door. By the time I reached home, the car had gone, but there on the verandah was a large 22-pound parcel. I felt tears pricking my eyes. I could not open the parcel alone, so I sent for the orphanage children. Together we pulled off the string, carefully undoing each knot. We folded the paper; taking care not to tear it unduly Excitement was mounting. Some thirty or forty pairs of eyes were focused on the large cardboard box. > From the top, I lifted out brightly-colored, knitted jerseys. Eyes sparkled as I gave them out. Then there were the knitted bandages for the leprosy patients, and the children looked a little bored. Then came a box of mixed raisins and sultanas – that would make a batch of buns for the weekend.
Then, as I put my hand in again, I felt the…..could it really be?
I grasped it and pulled it out. Yes, a brand new, rubber hot water bottle. I cried.
I had not asked God to send it; I had not truly believed that He could.
Ruth was in the front row of the children. She rushed forward, crying out, ‘If God has sent the bottle, He must have sent the dolly, too!’
Rummaging down to the bottom of the box, she pulled out the small, beautifully-dressed dolly. Her eyes shone! She had never doubted!
Looking up at me, she asked, ‘Can I go over with you and give this dolly to that little girl, so she’ll know that Jesus really loves her?’
‘Of course,’ I replied!
That parcel had been on the way for five whole months, packed up by my former Sunday school class, whose leader had heard and obeyed God’s prompting to send a hot water bottle, even to the equator.
And one of the girls had put in a dolly for an African child – five months before, in answer to the believing prayer of a ten-year-old to bring it ‘that afternoon.’
‘Before they call, I will answer.’ (Isaiah 65:24)
When you receive this, say the prayer. That’s all I ask. No strings attached. Just send it on to whomever you want but do send it on. Prayer is one of the best free gifts we receive. There is no cost, but a lot of rewards. Let’s continue praying for one another.
This awesome prayer takes less than a minute.
Gracious God, I ask you to bless my friends reading this. I ask You to minister to their spirit. Where there is pain, give them Your peace and mercy. Where there is self-doubting, release a renewed confidence to work through them. Where there is tiredness or exhaustion, I ask You to give them understanding, guidance, and strength. Where there is fear, reveal Your love and release to them Your courage. Bless their finances, give them greater vision, and raise up leaders and friends to support and encourage them. I ask You to do these things in Your name. Amen
P. S. Passing this on to anyone you consider a friend will bless you both. Passing this on to one not considered a friend is something your loving God would do.

White Again~Wednesday
Flying Fox Vineyard~ White Table
Vidal Blanc & Traminette ~Virginia 2012
The label reads “This wine pairs well with spicy food. And it is a perfect choice for sipping on the porch on a summer evening.”
This white wine blend of Vidal Blanc and Traminette grapes is a wine you want to drink chilled, on a warm sunny day. The color of this 2012 is crystal clear, and it smells of sugar and spice and everything nice with a hint of floral notes. This is another white I’d like to refer to as “crisp” with a bubbly-like taste to it. The winemaker claims it is perfect to sip on a summer evening, I’m also thinking on picnics, in the hot tub, or any time.
If you are familiar with Vidal Blanc and Traminette you know this to be a sweeter wine. Give it a try though, it is a less sweet version of a plain Vidal. And my sweet tooths out there it is sweet enough trust me.
[Top]Reporters emotion
Nothing is more embarrassing than a reporter having nothing to report on. Although, if it’s any consolation at least the police haven’t got a clue either. Envy comes and goes like the wind. Here one moment causing wreckage, and gone the next. A few more victims turned criminal, have been able to give statements on the situation. Nothing is concrete though, all of them, every single one of them, is an emotional mess. Their mind’s memory has been blurred, they can’t state who she is where she came from or what exactly she looks like. The only things similar in all the statements are; she wears a green mask, at times her hair turns green itself, and she likes to wear purple and black. You think this jokester in this small city would be easy to find, think again. Richmond has many places to hide.

Bodie Vineyards~ Rochette Rouge Red
Powhatan, Virginia 2009
The label reads “semi-dry red wine of the Buffalo Grape. It has a marvelous grape aroma, and is best served with red meat such as beef, pasta or with any dark chocolate.”
This red wine made from the “Buffalo Grape” is a deep purple bordering on blackness. It is such a unique color that I enjoyed swirling it around and around in my wine glass. The bouquet was deep as well. It had a classic red wine smell, and it tasted well balanced and near perfection. The “Buffalo Grape” is an inter-specific hybrid which originated in New York and only one winemaker that I know of is growing it here in Virginia.
If you are a loyal varietal kind of person, what are you afraid of? This is a good wine to wet your lips with. Now if you are new to wine, you can brag that you have tasted Virginia’s take on the beloved New York grape.
[Top]Alien pups & Cloaking devices
I recently heard the story of Gigi, a young pup from another planet who traveled to earth on a spaceship disguised as a tree stump. This sounded peculiar to me because it sounds as if my puppies have arrived the same way. I found them at the end of my street near a very out of place tree stump in the middle of the road. Where did these puppies come from? And are they from the same planet as Gigi? Here is a little excerpt from Gigi’s tale.
“Gigi was a young pup but she already knew at 4 weeks old she wanted to see the universe.
All alien pups get to travel at 8 weeks old, but Gigi couldn’t wait.
In the middle of the night while her mother and siblings were asleep, Gigi boarded the family’s spaceship.
She used her paw to start it up and make her selection.
Gigi was going to Planet Earth.
From the map it looked like a nice planet with land and water.
And her mother told her stories of when she had went there when she was younger.
Earth was full of people and dogs.
All sorts of dogs from all sorts of backgrounds.
Some native to the Planet Earth, others aliens like she.
Gigi didn’t forget to press the cloaking button after starting up the spaceship.
She knew this was important.
The cloaking button turned the spaceship into something else.
Her family spaceship turned into a large tree stump…”

Daveste~ La Brisa
Reisling 2011, North Carolina
On a trip to Charlotte North Carolina the beau and I stopped at Daveste Vineyards and we were not disappointed.
This Riesling was on the sweet end of things, but not so much that it would turn away dry wine fans. It had notes of honey suckle and it was easy to drink. I have a tendency to favor the Rieslings that are crisp and almost taste as if they were carbonated. This Riesling was one of those refreshing types.
I can easily recommend Daveste’s La Brisa to sweet wine drinkers because it has enough hints of residual sugar that it could nearly pass. Red wine lovers I’m sure could appreciate this fun Riesling, however it may not be your first choice wine. Support east coast vineyards and give it a try!

Twelve Years a Slave! Did anyone have any doubt? It is a must on your to do list if you haven’t seen it. The Best Supporting Actress winner, Lupita Nyong’o’s performance was stellar. She was such a Cinderella at the Oscars. I can’t wait to see what she does next. See Tyler Preston’s review on the movie: http://booksbyvicki.com/?cat=15. Also to make things easy on you I’ve posted a link to rent or purchase 12 Years a Slave off Amazon 🙂
